What it's like to live in Montero
Where it is
Montero is about 50 km north of Santa Cruz de la Sierra along the highway north, past Warnes. It's the capital of Obispo Santistevan province and the hub of the Norte Integrado, the farming region in the north of the department.
Who it suits
It's no bedroom suburb of Santa Cruz: Montero is a town with a life of its own, with its center, markets, schools and an economy built on sugar cane, rice and soy. Buyers here are families who live and work in the north, and people looking for a shop or a plot for a business.
Services
The center and established neighborhoods have shops, banks, health care and schools without a trip down to Santa Cruz. In new neighborhoods on the outskirts, as in any development still being built out, ask which utilities reach the street.
Before you buy
Plans, property taxes and permits go through the municipal government of Montero. Check the ownership record (folio real) at Derechos Reales and that the lot has approved plans. There are fewer listings than in the municipalities next to the city, so it's worth seeing each one in person and comparing with what's on offer in Warnes.
